Cr2+:ZnSe and Cr2+:ZnS crystals can be used as laser crystals to achieve the output of tunable laser in the 1.9-3μm band. Besides, It has excellent optical properties:they are suitable for LD direct pumping laser operation at room temperature; there is almost no thermal quenching phenomenon; the broader absorption band and the almost non-existent excited state absorption(ESA) determines that there are many options for its pump source.  such as LD, Er, Tm fiber lasers and Tm, Ho doped all-solid-state lasers.

The broader absorption band and the almost non-existent excited state absorption(ESA) also make Cr2+:ZnSe and Cr2+:ZnS crystals saturable absorber and ideal choices for passive Q-switched lasers in the "eye-safe" wavelength range and solid-state lasers of 1.5-2.1µm wavelength.
